There is a voice that doesn’t use words, listen to it.

The detox: You may reach a point in your decision-making when you no longer need other people’s opinions for guidance. You have gathered enough information from others. Now is the time to find your inner-voice, the ultimate teacher.

There are a lot of decisions you will need to make in life but when it comes to your twenties, it often feels like many of them require swift resolution before it becomes too late. Career choices. Living situations. Relationships. Babies? I’ve learned that one of the greatest teachers in life is a voice that doesn’t use words, listen to it.

The overwhelm of choices in your twenties

My friend recently told me about some tough decisions she's dealing with...

"Honestly, so many people have given me advice on what I should or could do that I'm overwhelmed by the multitude of paths. I don't even know if the voices in my head are my own.”

She went on to discuss the pressures from her family about a career decision that could impact her financial situation for a bit. “I have to be honest; I am miserable at my job," she says, a bit disheartened.

"Even though I don't have a backup plan, I'm seriously considering quitting my job and pursuing my passion on the side. I know I won’t make much money in the beginning so I’m hesitant. Some parts of me say to stay at my job, while others say leave already! I just don't know what to do.”

We continued chatting for a bit, but what struck me the most was her uncertainty about the voices in her head.

The truth is – every decision in life comes with a risk. I think that’s just something we all need to be okay with knowing. But it's possible to mitigate risk through two key approaches:

01. Educating yourself about your options

Educating yourself is the simpler of the two. You can see what others have done or explore possibilities to make informed decisions.

02. Following your intuition

Intuition is more challenging. It requires a commitment to understanding something specific — getting to know your inner voice.

Finding your inner-voice

Towards the end of our conversation, I gave her some advice. "When you find yourself overwhelmed with conflicting ideas, the best thing you can do is become really acquainted with your inner voice." I said.

"Spend time free journaling to release your anxieties before arriving at a calmer resolution. Consider limiting the number of people you seek advice from; you've gathered enough information from others. Now is the time to truly ask yourself."

The key takeaway is to unlearn the idea that other people can be your only teachers.

YOU, will be the only person on this planet – who knows you best. Spend more time alone, free of distractions to listen to how that voice sounds. How it speaks to you. What words it uses. Sometimes that inner voice is the best teacher of all.
